How To Become A Fashion Designer
Did you used to draw dresses and design clothes for your dolls when you were a child? Do you wear clothes understanding that gowns are not just clothes, but a way of self-expression? If yes, you were born to become a fashion designer.
You can’t become a fashion designer overnight. No one says that fashion designers, the fruits of whose boundless bright imagination everyone today dreams of feeling on his or her skin, suddenly reached the peak of their fame overnight. Like all the others they also had to climb the ladder of success to enjoy the smiles of fortune they do today.
Attending fashion design schools, fashion colleges or programs will help you get acquainted with fashion industry. You will be well aware of the duties and responsibilities of the fashion designer, fashion editor and fashion director. But the most primary task will be to teach you pattern-making, how to sew, how to cut fabric correctly and how to choose the best fabrics. Without these skills you cannot be called a designer no matter how creative you are. Students will also be given a chance to organize their own fashion shows, to take part in internships and enjoy the worldwide designers’ shows. Along with fashion design programs you must not forget to attend business courses.
To become a successful fashion designer you should first of all be able to create continuously. Your imagination must not have any boundaries. You must have a deep knowledge of the fashion history and be able to master the secrets of competition. Work in a design team and learn how to meet deadlines. Accept criticism and learn from your mistakes.
To be a talented fashion designer means not only having the talent for selling dresses to customers but also having the talent for selling the customers to your house of fashion.
Some famous fashion designers were discovered coincidentally. For instance, Ralph Lauren earned tremendous success by selling a small tie collection to one of the most famous US department stores, Bloomingdales. Laura Ashley started out as a secretary. Other designers started out under similar circumstances.
However, despite all the knowledge fashion courses provide you with, you should be well aware of the fact that it is not necessary to graduate from several fashion schools. You don’t need to wear the latest or the most expensive garments in haute couture. But you have to find your own style niche.
If you are a gifted fashion designer you will definitely be successful.
