Yves Saint Laurent Passes Away

Yves Saint Laurent Passes Away Influential French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent has passed away at the age of 71. Laurent fell ill and entered a hospital last week, however, his situation got worse over the time.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Laurent set the pace for fashion around the world, opening up the Japanese market and subsequently expanding to South Korea and Taiwan. In the 1970s, Laurent won the first prize in a competition sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat for a cocktail dress which he designed.

In the following years, Laurent was picked up by fashion designer Christion Dior who had been so impressed by the talent exhibited by Laurent that he hired him on the spot. At the age of 21, Laurent was named the Head of Dior’s Design House.

Fashionising.com reports that in 1983, Laurent became the first living fashion designer to be honored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 1962 he was released from Dior and with his partner Pierre Bergé started the house which bears his name. YSL served to popularise trends such as the beatnik look, safari jackets, tight pants & tall thigh high boots. He also created the iconic women’s tuxedo Le Smoking suit (pictured below), and was also the first to use a black models on the runway.

The designer knew that he had revolutionized fashion, that he had revolutionized the second half of the 20th century. His designs accompanied the evolution of women.

A funeral will be held this Thursday in Paris at the Eglise Saint-Roch. We regret the loss of such a great designer. May his soul rest in peace.
